Local Artist’s Work Featured in Canadian Fibre Exhibit
April 30, 2010
Local Fibre artist Kathy Tidswell is off to Ontario this weekend. Tidswell’s work entitled “Serenity” has been chosen to be part of this year’s Threadworks exhibition entitled “Trees”.
Threadworks is a special project of the Ontario Network of Needleworkers organized in co-operation with the Wellington County Museum and Archives. The mandate of Threadworks is to mount a juried show of exceptional creative needlework every three years, stitched by artists from across Canada. Over 230 entries were submitted from all across Canada with 61 being chosen to be part of the exhibition and Tidswell’s was one of them.
Tidswell explains, “My work combines painting on fabric with free motion embroidery to produce works of art.” Kathy also blends innovative and traditional techniques to create unique wall hangings and original wearable art. Her pieces have been juried into Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA/ACC), National Juried Shows as well as Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery Grand National Exhibitions. She is a juried member of the New Brunswick Crafts Council selling her work in art galleries and seasonal art and craft shows.
Teaching is also a love of Tidswell’s. She has been sharing her knowledge instructing as well as delivering slide/trunk shows from coast to coast for guilds, Quilt Canada, fibre art festivals, and retreats. In 2005, she was honoured with the CQA/ACC Teacher of the Year Award. For anyone wishing to learn free motion embroidery, Kathy is teaching four workshops in edVentures Fredericton’s 2010 summer program; Painting Backgrounds for Quilts and Embroideries (July 10), Painting with Thread (July 17 & 18), Flowers from Thread (July 24 & 25), and Texturizing the Painted Landscape (August 2 – 6).
The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place May 2 at the Wellington County Museum and Archives and travels to a number of museums and galleries across Ontario during the next 2 years. Tidswell says that she’s not expecting to win any awards but is thrilled to have her work chosen as part of this year’s exhibition.
