edVentures Offers New Drawing and Painting Workshops

For Immediate Release

Fredericton, NB – edVentures Fredericton, Atlantic Canada’s largest and most diverse summer vacation learning program in craft and culture, has begun its third season.  This summer’s program runs until August 20 and offers 130 workshops of varying lengths. Participants can choose from half, full, two or five-day workshops.

edVentures offers something for just about everyone; whether you’ve never picked up a paint brush before or if you’ve been drawing or painting for years and wish to learn a new technique.  There is a diverse range of workshops divided into 12 categories.  In the Drawing, Painting, and Mixed Medium category alone, there are 21 workshops with 7 new workshops developed for the 2010 program.

Most of the new offerings are from experienced edVentures instructors.  For those with previous drawing experience, New Brunswick College of Craft and Design instructor Jennifer Beckley is offering Silverpoint Drawing (August 2 – 6).  Participants will be able to complete silverpoint drawings from portrait, still-life, landscape and master drawing sources.  Instructor Lloyd Fitzgerald, who has been a professional artist for over 40 years, will offer a new 5-day workshop called Introduction to Pastel Drawing (July 19 – 23) for those with a bit of experience.  For those just beginning, Lloyd offers the 5-day workshop Basics of Drawing with Pencil & Ink (July 12 – 16).  For those looking to fine tune their skills, Marcus Kingston will offer a 2-day Intermediate Drawing (July 31 & August 1) workshop.  This workshop will focus on the history and relevance of the buildings of the Historic Garrison District with participants able to practice techniques in perspective, composition, shading, and line.

There are many more offerings including workshops by artists Glenn Priestley, Deanna Musgrave, and William Forrestall.  A full list of workshops can be found at www.edventures.ca.  Participants can register online or by calling Fredericton Tourism at 506-460-2233 or toll free at 1-888-850-1333.

All instructors have not only vast knowledge in the areas of their disciplines but have years of teaching experience. edVentures was awarded TIAC’s Innovator of the Year award in November.  It’s critical to the program to have quality instructors, those that can easily teach their craft yet who understand that participants are looking to learn in a relaxing, easy-going environment.

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, one of the edVentures partners, offers several new workshops in this category.  For anyone looking to learn to paint with oils, Carol Everett will offer a 5-day workshop called Introduction to Oil Painting: Light and Shadow (August 9 – 13).  Carol is also offering a unique workshop called Personal Guide Books 101: Exploring Personal Landscapes through Art (August 2 – 6).  The objective of this five day is a journey of discovery through drawing exercises.  Kimberley Herron is offering a 5-day workshop.  In Portrait Painting from Life and Photographs (July 19 – 23) participants will start by creating expression sketches and drawings to refine their portrait painting skills.  Using oil painting tricks and techniques, participants will create an oil on canvas painting and many preliminary sketches.  “Working with artists and with our edVentures community partners is a great privilege for a cultural institution.” says Adda Mihailescu, the Gallery’s Manager of Public Programs. “We hope we can increase the scope and the reach of our participation through this initiative.” Other community partners for the Fredericton Tourism run edVentures program include the NBCCD, the University of New Brunswick, Kings Landing Historical Settlement, and the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.
