edVentures offers Six New Workshops in Mind, Body & Spirit

June 29, 2010

Looking to relax and try something a little bit different or simply to distress and learn how to take better care of yourself?  edVentures Fredericton is offering six new Mind, Body & Spirit workshops to try.  Ranging from half day (3 hours) right up to 5-days (30 hours), these unique workshops allow participants to acquire a feel for various practices that they can try and, if enjoyed, are able to incorporate easy into everyday routines.

Three different half-day sessions in Tai Chi will be offered the weekend of July 10 & 11.  “The benefit of having these sessions all on one weekend is that participants can experience two different certified instructors and three different levels of understanding and intensity of the practice of Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan” explains instructor Mary Kennedy. “The Chi Kung & Meditation session focusing on breath, concentration and energy; the Intro to Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan session focusing on body alignment and movement and then seeing how the "Tai Chi Boot Camp" puts that all together into one package as a really great workout that will leave you exhausted... yet at the same time energized!"

Meditation in Everyday Life (August 14), a one-day introduction, will be taught by instructor Veit Weber.  Veit has been practicing meditation for eighteen years.  He has undertaken extensive training in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and is authorized to teach by the Shambhala Institute.  “In this workshops participants will learn a basic breathing meditation technique called Shamatha, meaning “peaceful abiding”, as well as receive an introduction to some contemplation-style meditation,” explains Veit.   Weit says, “Anyone that can fit in an extra 10 minutes a day will be able to practice and incorporate what is learned in this workshop into their daily routine.”  Ultimately participants will learn to relax which will be helpful in everyday life.

Brune Clavette is teaching a one-day workshop called Developing a Sense of Touch: Care Giving for Loved Ones.  This workshop is an opportunity for the general public to learn the OPEN method when helping anyone from children to elderly with their health issues. O.P.E.N. stands for Oneness, Presence, Energy, and Now.  Brune has 25 years clinical experience in traditional Chinese medicine and massage therapy. Participants will learn how to bring stillness to an agitated loved one or help stimulated and reinforce a weak one. Also, back by popular demand, CFQ Qi Gong is offered.  Come and enjoy this simple daily meditation in movement routine. Participants will learn the basic Taoist and Buddhist teachings of health maintenance; the shared light from Master Yap Soon Yeong principles. Enjoyed by thousands across the world, this basic level 1 course will provide the tools to create a personal daily practice.

Yoga for You: Developing Your Own Personal Practice, with instructor Zsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady, is a new workshop for any participants that are looking to incorporate yoga into their new or established exercise routine. This workshop is offered 5 weekday mornings.  Participants will be able to learn or enhance their yoga poses as well as create their own personal practice.  This workshop is offered 5 mornings. Yoga for You: Developing your own Personal Practice will be offered during the mornings of July 19 - 23.  “This calm and gentle hatha yoga practice is appropriate for beginner and for

continuing yoga students” explains Zsuzsa, who has been teaching yoga for over 20 years.  She goes on to say, “In this workshop you will learn to create your very own home practice, one that is just right for you.”

Zsuzsa will also teach Grace & Motion: Experiencing Dance, Yoga & Pilates, during afternoons of the same week as Yoga – perfect for anyone who wishes to try both workshops. This multi-generational, fun workshop is for anyone who likes to dance.  Students with or without formal dance training are welcome to join. Each afternoon will include some Pilates exercises for building a strong core, some modern dance and basic ballet techniques, some directed, fun dance improvisation, and end with a yoga cool down.  This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels.

A new two-part Vitality Qi Gong Intensive is being offered by Instructor Maurice Lavigne.  Qi Gong combines oriental pressure point therapy, meditation and movement to clear, balance and strengthen the human energy system.  This workshop is given over a 5-day period in two parts. Part one focuses on self-help techniques and lasts 2 days. Part two focuses on learning more advanced healing methods to help one’s own self and others and lasts 3 days.  The first two day portion is also open to children 12+ when accompanied by a participating adult.  A participant may register for part one only, however, part one is a prerequisite to part two.

Introduction to Canoeing and Kayaking for Seniors & Adults (August 9 – 13) is being offered this summer by the Small Craft Aquatic Centre.  This is an opportunity to learn basic kayak and canoeing strokes, such as J-Stroke and sweep. This workshop was added as a result of the very popular Introduction to Canoeing and Kayaking for Teens (July 5 – 9).
