The 2011 edVentures line up features top New Brunswick artists and mind-body practitioners including jewellery designer Trudy Gallagher,  ceramist Peter Thomas, artists Lloyd Fitzgerald and Deanna Musgrave, Qi Gong teachers Maurice Lavigne and Brune Clavette, master rug hooker Doris Norman and architect John Leroux. In all, more than 50 instructors will offer workshops this summer to local residents and visitors from across Canada and North America, in day-long, weekend or week-long formats.

Six new instructors will offer workshops this year, including Patterson, ceramic restoration expert Maria Guevara, batik painter Rita Sassani, weaver Bronwyn Gallagher, and artists Linda Kelly and Hannah Grant.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that we continue to attract top teachers to the edVentures program. To add someone of Freeman Patterson’s reputation to our line up this year is really exciting. He’s known around the world as a great photographer and a superior teacher,” says David Seabrook, manager of Fredericton Tourism.

Patterson will offer a workshop on visual design in photography. No experience is necessary other than knowing the basic functions of your camera.

edVentures Fredericton is produced by Fredericton Tourism with principle partner the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD),  Kings Landing Historical Settlement, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the University of New Brunswick’s College of Extended Learning, and Science East. Most of the workshops take place at the NBCCD, with some at Kings Landing, UNB and Science East. The NBCCD and its professional instructors will offer 39 workshops.

Workshops are offered in a wide variety of categories including Drawing, Painting and Mixed Media, Fashion and Sewing, Jewellery and Metalwork, Heritage Offerings, Photography & Digital Media, Pottery, Textiles and Exploring Creativity, and Mind, Body & Spirit.

“edVentures has gained a reputation for offering informal, easy-going, small-group workshops offered by incredible instructors who really know their material. People have a great time learning and creating. In most workshops, you take home a finished piece whether it be jewellery or pottery or your own fashion piece,” says Seabrook.

Most edVentures workshops are designed for adults, but the program will also offer 20 children’s and youth workshops in 2011.

“edVentures is great fun and showcases Fredericton’s incredibly diverse cultural scene. Visitors come for workshops and go to the Kings Landing, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and go to free concerts, films, Changing of the Guard in the Garrison to create a complete vacation experience,” Seabrook adds.

No experience is necessary for most of the workshops. They are designed with new, amateur hobbyists in mind. A few intermediate courses are also offered.

edVentures Fredericton works with local accommodations to offer participants exclusive lodging rates ranging from four-star hotels to university residences.
