Ned BearNed Bear

Ned Bear is a sculptor of natural media, and a maker of the traditional Native American flute. He received formal arts training from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design,  graduating with honors in 1983. He continued art studies at the First Nations University of Canada, Regina Sask., with a concentration of Aboriginal Arts.  He then moved on to fine art studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Halifax NS.  Ned holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from University of New Brunswick (UNB), with continued studies in Critical Theory, at the UNB Education Graduate Program.

Ned is a N.B. Certified teacher, and has taught a Native Art program at the District 18 Fredericton High School. He then moved on to the position of Director of Education for a local First Nation community. He managed to continue his art practice throughout, and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits, presenting art that was guided by a sense of traditional-spiritual value.  He was awarded a 2006 fellowship from the Smithsonian Institute, New York City, USA, and awarded a 2007 Gibraltar International Artist Residency, Toronto Island, Ontario
